ADHD Coaching and Testing

Coaching versus Therapy

Coaching and therapy are both forms of support that can help individuals overcome challenges and achieve their goals, but they are distinct in several ways:

Purpose:

Coaching focuses on helping individuals achieve specific goals, such as improving their performance, developing new skills, or making changes in their lives. Therapy, on the other hand, focuses on helping individuals address and resolve mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, or trauma.

Approach:

Coaching typically takes a solution-focused approach, using techniques such as goal setting and action planning to help individuals achieve their desired outcomes. Therapy, on the other hand, often takes a more introspective approach, exploring the root causes of mental health issues and helping individuals develop insight and understanding.

Relationship:

Coaching is typically a more collaborative and goal-oriented relationship, with the coach working alongside the individual to help them achieve their desired outcomes. In therapy, the relationship is more therapeutic, with the therapist serving as a guide and support as the individual works through their mental health issues.

Training and Qualifications:

Coaches are typically trained in coaching techniques and methods, but may not have the same level of training and qualifications as therapists. There is no state or national test to qualify a coach, no educational requirement and no regulatory body that creates, monitors or enforces coaching standards, laws or ethics, like done in healthcare. Therapists are typically licensed mental health professionals with advanced training in psychology or a related field. They have masters or doctorate degrees, and are monitored by state regulatory bodies. This is because advanced education and training is needed for mental heath treatment. Remember, we’re talking about  as a means to get results, so, there is not need for coaching to be treated in the same way, because it’s not therapy. It’s coaching. We elaborate on this because sometimes people get confused on the difference; thinking they’ll get speedy or “raw” feedback coaching. Coaching is a different product and approach than therapy. A similar comparison:- The football coach develops a game plan and puts it into action. He ensures the team works to accomplish goals. He’s there to ensure I happens, holds you accountable and rn urges a sling the way. He’s here for football – he’s here to win games. Not soccer. Not ballet. Not your moms lasanga. Winning Football – that’s it. If you are hurt, he’ll get you off the field and ensure you get medical care. Bu he’s not personally treating your torn ligament.- A physical therapist helps patients repair injuries. This can be from sports, aging, car accidents, etc. They might help a child repair a torn ACL at 9am and then help a grandma with recovery after her hip surgery, at 10am. He really doesn’t have anything to do with the coach, does he? That is the difference between coaching and a health care provider.

Time Limited:

Therapy is often a years-long process of placing words on, and finding healing around, painful or traumatic lived experiences past and present. Coaching is specific, measurable action steps or solutions to get a desired result. Because coaching is a few meetings with specific goals and topics, (and not years of therapy) we can help more people who are ready to take action today.

In conclusion, coaching and therapy are distinct forms of support that serve different purposes and employ different approaches. While both can be valuable in helping individuals overcome challenges and achieve their goals, it’s important to choose the right form of support based on the specific needs and goals of the individual.

Because our team of coaches are also licensed therapists or doctors who also actively practice therapy in other arenas, we’re great at making sure you’re getting the level of care you need. If we spot that you or a child needs therapy before action steps can happen, we’ll see it and tell you. We won’t let you waste money on coaching you’re not ready for. And, we won’t encourage or pressure you sign up for therapy if you don’t need it to accomplish the goals and results you need from coaching.
