Couples and Family Counseling

What IS couples counseling?

Couples therapy is a type of psychotherapy designed to help couples improve their relationship and resolve conflicts. Couples therapy can be beneficial for couples who are experiencing a wide range of relationship difficulties, including communication problems, intimacy issues, infidelity, and conflicts related to parenting, finances, or other life stressors.

What are the benefits?

One of the primary benefits of couples therapy is improved communication. Couples who participate in therapy learn how to effectively communicate their thoughts, feelings, and needs to their partner, leading to a reduction in conflict and an increase in understanding and intimacy. Therapy can also help couples identify and address negative communication patterns, such as criticism, defensiveness, or avoidance, which can contribute to relationship problems.

Another benefit of couples therapy is increased intimacy and closeness. Through therapy, couples can work on increasing emotional and physical intimacy, leading to a deeper sense of connection and satisfaction in the relationship. Couples can also work on resolving sexual issues and improving their sexual relationship.

Couples therapy can also help couples resolve conflicts and find common ground. Couples learn how to negotiate and compromise in order to find mutually satisfactory solutions to their problems. By working through conflicts together, couples can improve their problem-solving skills, leading to a more harmonious and stable relationship.

Couples therapy can also help couples address the impact of past experiences and traumas on their relationship. Couples may learn how to work through past hurt and trauma, and how to support each other in overcoming these experiences.

Couples therapy provides numerous benefits for couples who are experiencing relationship difficulties. Through therapy, couples can improve their communication, increase intimacy and closeness, resolve conflicts, and address the impact of past experiences on their relationship. If you and your partner are experiencing relationship difficulties, it is recommended to seek the help of a mental health professional who specializes in couples therapy. With the right support, couples can improve their relationship and find greater happiness and fulfillment together.

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) and Emotionally Focused Family Therapy is a research-based approach to couples or family therapy that focuses on emotions as the key to resolving relationship difficulties. EFT is a short-term, structured therapy that aims to help couples and families, strengthen their emotional bond, increase intimacy and closeness, and improve communication.

EFT and EFFT is based on the idea that couples’ and family problems are largely related to a cycle of negative interactions in which partners feel disconnected and isolated from each other.
